The Spread and Significance of New Military Units within the Syrian Regime Forces
Russia established several military units after declaring its military intervention in Syria 2015. These units have a similar formal structure to those found in official military institutions of countries, but differ in terms of organizational structure, size, equipment, and tasks. While the decisions regarding their establishment were made by the Syrian regime's General Staff, they are effectively linked to the central military command of Russian forces at the Hmeimim base.
An analytical report released by Jusoor Center for Studies screens the deployment locations of the Fourth and Fifth Corps, the motives behind their formation by Russia, and the deviations from military operational rules, such as the reliance on contractors and relative training for the combat groups comprising these corps.
