The Primary Map of the De-Militarized Zone in Idlib turkish - russian agreement
Jusoor for Studies center published a map explaining the final shape of the de-mitilarized zone which has been agreed upon in the Sochi agreement on 17th of September 2018 between president Erdoğan and president Putin.
Based on the formal protocol annex number (1) issued on 21st of September 2018 which is signed by the Turkish and Russian technical committees, Jusoor for Studies published the semi-final form of the map.
According to the map, the depth of demilitarized zone ranges between 15 and 20 km, will be limited to the opposition-held areas and Jusoor center estimates the total area to be 3200 sq/m and the length to be around 240 km.
The Turkish and Russian technical committees did not finalize many issues, heavy weaponry is one of these issues, which is to be pulled out of the demilitarized area and the Russian patrols will make surveillance and observation.
The Russian president Vladimir Putin confirmed that the de-escalation zones agreement is still active and the arrangement of the demilitarized zone is going on well in coordination with Turkey which is applying its commitment for the situation in Idlib Governorate and its surrounding.
If the articles of the agreement are applied, the forth de-escalation zone will turn into a temporary stability zone and after that into a complete seize fire zone, and accordingly there will be mechanisms to activate the international roads Aleppo-Damascus (M-5) and Aleppo-Latakia (M-4), and Turkey will enhance its observation point and start a joint patrols with Russia in the de-militarized zone.
